She likes International House of Pancakes or IHop as they are calling themselves these days. Some Mad (Madison Ave ad) man decided IHop sounded young and hip probably.

She also likes Jack in the Box. She boycotted JITB for a few years back in the ’90’s when they started to call french fries “freedom” fries, but the relationship has since been repaired.  Two great restaurant chains doing the same thing– only different.

Today is IHop’s National Pancake Day Celebration. From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., People will get one free short stack or three of IHop’s famous buttermilk pancakes. The purpose of the pancake give-away is to encourage donations to support local children’s hospitals through Children’s Miracle Networks.

IHOP introduced National Pancake Day in 2006.  She must have been living under a rock for the past four years because this is the first time She’d ever heard of National Pancake Day.

National Pancake Day typically takes place on Shrove Tuesday or  Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras. National Pancake Day is a tradition that dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made in order to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products.

This year IHop is giving away free short stacks on Tuesday, February 23, extending the fundraising window by one week to maximize donations for Children’s Miracle Network. The company hopes to raise $5 million in five years for Children’s Miracle Network and other local charities in 2010!

Jack in the Box seems to have timed their free grilled sandwich give-away to coincide with National Pancake Day at IHop. On those points the similarities end. There is hardly even a patina of tradition, altruism or history attached to their grilled sandwich give-away which is reported to be a reaction to falling profits.

When People buy a large drink they get a grilled sandwich for free. She had the Turkey, Bacon & Cheddar– roasted turkey, bacon, cheddar cheese and a sun-dried Tomato sauce all on grilled artisan bread.   Her review:  “It was de*licious!”

Tuesday, February 23, 2010. Thanks to IHop and Jack in the Box, fat Tuesday indeed!
