♫Purple haze all in my brain
Lately things just don’t seem the same
Actin’ funny, but I don’t know why
‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky
— Jimi Hendrix| Purple Haze

Purple Haze is a song written, the day after Christmas, in 1966 by Jimi Hendrix. James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix was born Johnny Allen Hendrix in Seattle, WA on November 27, 1942. He was a young musician.

The song debuted live on January 8, 1967, in Sheffield in the north of England. The track was the signature song Hendrix played in concert on September 6, 1970, days before his shocking death of a drug overdose twelve days later. He was 27 years old.

Purple Haze is a song about how it feels to be intoxicated by drugs. There are many drugs in this country that are illegal to buy, use, possess and sell. When something has been declared illegal, you are committing a crime when you scheme to buy, use or possess it. You are harming yourself and you are breaking the law.

You may also harm others. A Person intoxicated and impaired under the influence of drugs could be driving on the freeway at the exact same time as your mother or father. Or this Person may be working as a doctor or fireman or be the cashier at your neighborhood Von’s. Would you want a doctor treating you if he or she were high on drugs? Do you think they could even do a good job in that condition?

Sometimes laws seem strange, even unreasonable. They are not in place to frustrate us but rather, they are in place for our benefit even when we may not always understand or immediately appreciate what that benefit is.

Had he lived, this talented and remarkable musician would have been 68 years old today. Just think of all the music inside his head we will never hear; all the notes he will never play, all the songs he will never write. That’s what’s bad about illegal drug use. That’s what’s bad. Don’t you agree?

Goodwill Energies I direct
Toward each and every one of you
Each and every day
