These Things Are Good

In Animals and Pets, Bulldog Health, bulldogs, Music on February 15, 2010 at 2:26 AM
These things are good…
Ice cream and cake, a ride on a Harley, seeing monkeys in a tree
Rain on my tongue
and the sun shining on my face.
These things are a drag…
Dust in my hair, holes in my shoes, no money in my pocket,
and the sun shining on my face.
Roy Dennis (Rocky) 1964-1980 from the movie “Mask”/1985
I love when she bathes me in water softened with Epsom salt.  It takes the itches away. It dries up interdigital cysts and other minor skin irritations and abrasions. It makes me smell good all the time and at least for me, it helps lengthen the interval between baths.  She bathes me on average once a month.

She cares for my nose fold, ears, mouth, toes and anus every day. She does not use baby wipes or anything with peroxide. To eliminate chemical allergies, She washes everything using dye free, perfume free detergents.  When the vet techs were gathering information about me for my TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) surgery in December, they marveled at how clean my ears and nose fold were and about how white, soft, shiny and silky my coat was. And That was a lot since I don’t have a dense coat.

After my corneal ulcer episode, I became very itchy.  Of course it was summer time as well so that didn’t help matters. My vet recommended OTC benedryl.  It worked for me. It took away the itchiness in the back of my throat, (which was good ’cause then She stopped referring to me as Her bulldog version of Felix Unger).

Summer also may expose bulldogs to a whole range of potential irritants, allergans and sensitivities.  I love the beach, but sometimes dried seaweed on the beach harbor sand mites that may get in your ears or fly up your nose and even bite. Salt water, if not rinsed off thoroughly and immediately may become trapped in wrinkles and folds. This creates a moist breeding ground that may contribute to or exacerbate hot spots in bulldogs that are prone to them and make your bully smelly.

Your bulldog could even have a sensitivity to pollutants in ocean water that may contribute to tearing, causing ugly stains that are deep, dark and resistant to most tear stain remedies. I developed a tear stain because of my eye injury. After I recovered, She wiped the stain every day with a soft cloth soaked in Epsom salt water. To this day, I have no stains.

Lush, wet grass and ground cover may cause interdigital cysts. I’m hypersensitive to periwinkle. When I stopped walking on periwinkle, I stopped getting ID cysts. But when I did get them, She soaked my feet in warm water and Epsom salt, thoroughly dried the affected areas, then wiped them with a Clearasil pad.  Yes, Clearsil.

Using olive oil to moisturize and calm my skin was a happy accident.  Last year, She rubbed my itchy shoulder with some olive oil.  She noticed I wasn’t scratching there anymore.  Then when I got an itch behind my ear, She rubbed in olive oil.

Now, every time I take a bath, She pours warm olive oil on my back, the area behind my ears and rubs some in my pie hole. Then She does a deep massage of the areas where I used to get most itchy–  behind my shoulder and ears. She towels off the excess on my coat taking care not to rub my skin with the towel.  Then She gets the brush out and spends about a half hour vigorously brushing me.  Especially my tight tail. Ahhh. Afterwards I just go to sleep. It’s That calming.

She will generally get what’s on sale or  She’ll get the warehouse size containers because when practical, she cooks with olive oil.  It lasts several months. And yes, She does use a separate container for my olive oil. I even like it when she drizzles some on my Royal Canin, or gives me a piece of bread She’s dipped in it. Ummm.  Yum.  These things are good.

The ADVENTURES OF GUMBY

In bulldogs, Children's Literacy, English bulldogs, K-12 Education, Television, ThatOne WORD on November 4, 2009 at 12:23 AM

The beginning… Fifty plus years ago in 1955 Sam Engel of 20th Century Fox asked Gumby’s creator, Art Clokey “Can you make little clay figures and animate them into children’s stories? I want to improve the quality of childrens TV.”

Art and his wife felt the same way about the need for better childrens programing. They were the parents of a one year old daughter. So Art told Sam yes, he could do that, and that’s how Gumby got his own TV show on NBC.

That's life today

The Middle… In 1977, Gumby aired on the Disney Channel.  The fan mail came pouring in, making Art and and his wife, Gloria, realize how important the show still was to children and their baby boomer parents who grew up watching the adventures of  Gumby and all his pals on TV.

Just about that time, comedian Eddie Murphy performed a series of hilarious skits on Saturday Night Live spoofing Gumby. This increased demand for Gumby’s comeback. The early episodes were rerun on TV where a whole new generation of children became fans of the adventure series. Many college aged kids who’d grown up with Gumby in the 60’s got into it all over again.

By the middle of the 90’s Nickelodeon was using all of the Gumby Adventures from the 50’s, 60’s and 80’s for it’s anchor spots at 8:00 am and 2:00 pm. Gumby was on top of their ratings for over three years. Now wherever Art goes he is mobbed by early teens who grew up loving Gumby in the mid ’90s.

The end..?

Gumby would always begin his adventures by walking into a giant book. That’s one of the reasons why She still loves Gumby and as you can see, so do I.

Mommy told me something
A little kid should know
It’s all about the devil
And I’ve learned to hate him so
She said he causes trouble
When you let him in the room,
He will never ever leave you
If your heart is filled with gloom
So let the sun shine in
Face it with a grin
Smilers never lose
And frowners never win
So let the sun shine in
Face it with a grin
Open up your heart and let the sun shine in
When you are unhappy
The devil wears a grin
But oh, he starts to running
When the light comes pouring in
I know he’ll be unhappy
‘Cause I’ll never wear a frown
Maybe if we keep on smiling
He’ll get tired of hanging ’round.
If I forget to say my prayers
The devil jumps with glee
But he feels so awful awful
When he sees me on my knees
So if you’re full of trouble
And you never seem to win
Just open up your heart and let the sun shine in
So let the sun shine in
Face it with a grin
Smilers never lose
And frowners never win
So let the sun shine in
Face it with a grin
Open up your heart
And let the sun shine in

“I look up and I see God
I look down, and see That Dog
Simple spelling G-O-D
That spelled backward, D-O-G
They both stay with me all day
I’m the one who walks away
Yet, both of them, they wait for me
And dance at my return with glee.
Both love me no matter what
God Devine  That? canine mutt
When I fail or I get stumped
God forgives– That shakes his rump
God’s love devised to make the dog
Dog reflects that love from God
I see love from both sides now
Head, hand, heart raise
Amen
Bow.. Wow”
